Wondering when to book your baby's first photos? As a newborn photographer in Carryduff, just outside Belfast, this is one of the questions I'm asked most often. While every baby is unique, there's a good reason why photographers recommend those precious first two weeks—and it goes far beyond getting a sleepy photo.
"I Can't Believe How Much They've Changed Already"
One of the things parents often say when they arrive at my Carryduff studio is:
"I can't believe how much they've changed already."
They're absolutely right.
The newborn stage is incredibly short. Tiny fingers begin to stretch, wrinkly feet smooth out, and babies quickly become more alert and curious about the world around them. Those sleepy, curled-up moments that remind us of life in the womb gradually disappear.
That's why most professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling a session during the first 5–14 days after birth. It's not because older babies can't be photographed—they absolutely can—but those first days offer a unique opportunity to capture your baby's earliest memories in a natural and relaxed way.
Where Did the Tradition of Newborn Photography Begin?
The idea of photographing babies isn't new.
In fact, family portraits have been treasured for almost 200 years.
During the Victorian era, having a professional photograph taken was considered a special occasion. Cameras required very long exposure times, making it almost impossible to photograph awake babies.
Many early portraits featured sleeping infants or babies carefully supported by their parents. In some fascinating Victorian photographs, mothers were hidden beneath blankets or behind chairs to keep their baby safely in position. Today, these are known as "Hidden Mother" photographs and offer a glimpse into the early history of family photography
.
As camera technology improved throughout the twentieth century, photographers could capture babies more naturally.
The modern style of newborn photography that we recognise today—with soft wraps, neutral colours, gentle posing and beautiful family portraits—really began to flourish in the late 1990s and early 2000s as digital photography became more advanced.
Today, the focus isn't simply on creating beautiful images. It's about documenting one of the most important moments in a family's life while ensuring every session is safe, calm and completely baby-led.
Why Are the First Two Weeks So Special?
There isn't a magic deadline.
Rather, there are several natural reasons why this age often works beautifully.
1. Newborns Tend to Sleep More Deeply
During their first couple of weeks, many babies spend much of their day sleeping.
A full tummy, a warm studio and plenty of cuddles often help them settle comfortably, allowing gentle transitions between wrapped poses without disturbing them.
Of course, every baby has their own personality.
Some sleep for most of the session.
Others decide they'd much rather stay awake and keep an eye on everything happening around them!
That's perfectly normal, and sessions should always work around your baby's needs—not the other way around.
2. Babies Naturally Curl Into Comfortable Positions
For nine months your baby has grown in a wonderfully snug environment.
During those early days they often still enjoy being wrapped and gently curled, creating the timeless newborn photographs many parents fall in love with.
As babies reach three or four weeks, they begin stretching their arms and legs more frequently and become increasingly alert.
Every stage is beautiful—but it creates a different style of photograph.
3. Tiny Details Change Faster Than You Think
One of my favourite parts of every session is photographing the little details parents never want to forget.
Tiny eyelashes.
Soft wisps of hair.
Little fingers wrapped around Mum's thumb.
Wrinkly feet.
Perfect button noses.
These details seem so familiar in the moment, yet only weeks later they're already changing.
Professional newborn photography freezes these tiny memories forever.
4. It's About Your Family's Story
Newborn photography isn't simply about posed portraits.
It's about documenting the beginning of a brand-new chapter.
The way Dad looks at his daughter for the first time.
The proud smile of a big brother.
The tiny hand resting in Mum's palm.
Years from now, these photographs become far more valuable than anyone expects.
They become family history.
What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?
Please don't worry.
One of the biggest myths about newborn photography is that you've "missed your chance."
You haven't.
I've photographed babies who were:
3 weeks old
5 weeks old
8 weeks old
Several months old
Older babies simply create different photographs.
Instead of sleepy curled-up poses, we often capture:
Beautiful eye contact
Curious expressions
Tiny smiles
Stretching
Natural interactions with parents
Every age tells its own story.
Is Newborn Photography Safe?
As parents, this is often your biggest concern—and rightly so.
Your baby's comfort and wellbeing should always come first.
In my Carryduff studio, every newborn session is completely baby-led.
That means:
Your baby is never forced into a pose.
Plenty of time is allowed for feeding, cuddles and nappy changes.
The studio is kept warm and comfortable.
Wraps, blankets and props are cleaned between sessions.
Complex poses seen online are created using safe composite techniques where appropriate—not by balancing or placing babies in unsafe positions.
Sometimes the best photograph of the day is simply your baby sleeping peacefully in your arms.
When Should You Book a Newborn Photography Session?
The best time to book is actually during pregnancy.
Most parents reserve their session after their 20-week scan.
Rather than booking a fixed date, I reserve space around your due date.
Once your baby arrives, we'll confirm the session at a time that works best for you.
This gives you flexibility while making sure you don't miss those precious early days if you'd like sleepy newborn portraits.
What Happens During a Session?
One thing I always tell parents is this:
There's absolutely no rush.
A newborn session usually lasts between two and three hours because everything happens at your baby's pace.
During your visit we'll pause whenever your little one needs:
A feed
A cuddle
A nappy change
A comfort break
Some babies sleep throughout.
Others stay awake for most of the session.
Either way, beautiful photographs are always possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3 weeks too old for newborn photos?

We simply stop, cuddle, feed and settle your baby before continuing.
Your baby's comfort always comes first.
Can parents and siblings be included?

Some of the most treasured photographs are the ones showing your family's first moments together.
What should we wear?
Neutral, soft colours such as cream, beige, white, grey and earthy tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby.
Do you provide wraps and props?
Yes.
Everything needed for your baby's session is provided, including carefully selected wraps, blankets and accessories.

Long nights become cherished memories.
Tiny fingers grow stronger.
Sleepy cuddles become playful giggles.
