Newborn Mini Session vs Full Newborn Experience – Which Is Right For You?
Your baby is only tiny for such a short time, and newborn photography is a beautiful way to capture those first precious days.
But when you start looking at newborn photography, you may wonder: Do I need a full newborn experience, or would a mini newborn session be enough?
The answer really depends on what you are looking for.
At Andrea Payne Photography, based in Carryduff and serving families across Belfast, Lisburn, South Belfast, Dundonald, East Belfast and surrounding areas, I offer both mini newborn sessions and full newborn experiences, giving families a choice depending on their budget, the type of photographs they want and how much variety they would like from their session.
What is a newborn mini session?
A newborn mini session is a shorter, simpler and more budget-friendly option.
My mini newborn session is £195 and is designed specifically for parents who would love beautiful professional newborn portraits without booking a longer full experience.
The session lasts approximately 30–60 minutes and includes:
Baby only or Family
5 professionally edited digital images
Images emailed directly to you
Simple beanbag posing or simple family poses
A choice of wrapped poses or simple newborn poses
Your choice of neutral or one colour
One simple setup
There are no props or elaborate setups included with the mini session.
This is a lovely option if you mainly want a handful of beautiful images of your new baby while keeping the session shorter and the cost lower.
Who is a mini newborn session ideal for?
A mini session can be perfect if:
You are working to a budget. You still want professional newborn photography but don't want to invest in a larger package.
You mainly want photographs of baby. The mini session is baby only, so it is ideal if your priority is those gorgeous little newborn features, tiny hands and feet and beautiful posed portraits.
You prefer something quick and simple. Not every family wants a longer photography experience. Some parents simply want a few beautiful images to remember how tiny their baby was.
What is the full newborn experience?
The full newborn experience gives us much more time and flexibility.
Rather than focusing on one simple setup, the session can include a wider variety of photographs and styling.
Depending on the package you choose, this can include things such as:
Beautifully styled newborn setups
A variety of colours and backgrounds
Wrapped and unwrapped poses
Different poses and combinations
Props and accessories
Family photographs
Parent and baby photographs
Sibling photographs
More variety and choice throughout the session
The full experience is designed for families who want to create a complete collection of memories, rather than just a handful of baby-only portraits.
There is also more time for us to work around baby's needs. Newborns don't work to a timetable — they need feeding, cuddles, changing and plenty of patience!
That's why I keep my newborn sessions relaxed and baby-led.
Mini newborn session or full experience?
The easiest way to think about the difference is:
Choose the MINI if:
✔ You want baby-only photographs✔ You want a shorter session✔ You want 5 beautiful digital images✔ You prefer simple beanbag posing✔ You are looking for a more budget-friendly option✔
Choose the FULL EXPERIENCE if:
✔ You want photographs of the whole family✔ You want sibling photographs✔ You want more variety and different setups✔ You love styled newborn photography✔ You want props, colours and different poses✔ You want a larger collection of memories✔ You want more time and flexibility during your session
Neither option is "better" — they are simply designed for different needs.
Why choose a specialist newborn photographer?
Whether you choose a mini session or a full newborn experience, your baby's safety should always come first.
I have 14 years of photography experience, specialist training in newborn photography, and I am fully insured and health and safety trained.
Newborn photography isn't simply about taking pretty photographs. It involves knowing how to safely handle and pose a tiny baby, understanding when baby needs a break, and knowing when a particular pose isn't suitable.
My Carryduff studio is a calm, warm environment where we take things at baby's pace.
There is never a rush.
When should you book your newborn session?
Ideally, newborn sessions take place when babies are around 5–14 days old, as this is when they are often particularly sleepy and suited to those curled-up newborn poses.
However, don't panic if your baby is older.
I can photograph babies beyond this age too, and every baby is different.
The important thing is to book before your baby arrives where possible. Your due date doesn't need to be exact — we can work from your expected date and arrange the session once baby arrives.
Beautiful newborn photographs don't have to mean a huge investment
I understand that families are watching their budgets, and professional photography can feel like a big decision.
That's why I wanted to offer a mini newborn option alongside my full newborn experiences.
The mini session allows you to have beautiful, professionally photographed memories of your baby's first days without committing to a larger session.
And if you have always dreamed of photographs with the whole family, different setups, props and plenty of variety, the full newborn experience gives you the opportunity to create something much more complete.
Ultimately, it comes down to what you want to remember.
Whether that's five beautiful portraits of your tiny newborn or a complete collection showing your baby, you, your partner and your family together — those early days are worth remembering.
