What to wear on your Newborn session?

Preparing for a newborn photography session can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience, especially when it comes to deciding what to wear. Your wardrobe choices play a big role in creating timeless, cohesive photos that focus on your baby and the bond of your family. Here’s a guide to help you and your family look and feel your best during the session.

1. Keep It Simple and Neutral

Neutral tones and simple designs work best for newborn photography because they:

  • Keep the focus on the baby and your family’s connection.

  • Create a timeless and elegant look that won’t feel dated over the years.

Opt for colours like:

  • Whites

  • Creams

  • Beiges

  • Pastels

  • Soft grays

These tones are versatile and complement most skin tones while blending seamlessly with typical newborn photography props and backdrops.

2. Prioritise Comfort

Sessions with newborns can take a few hours, so wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in. For new moms, consider soft, flowy fabrics that allow for movement and create a relaxed, flattering silhouette.

3. Coordinate Without Matching

While it’s great to coordinate outfits as a family, avoid wearing identical clothes. Instead:

  • Choose a colour palette with 2–3 complementary shades.

  • Mix textures and fabrics to add depth without clashing.

For example, if one parent wears a cream-colored sweater, the other might wear a soft grey shirt, and siblings can add a touch of pastel.

4. Avoid Bold Patterns and Logos

Bold patterns, bright colours, and logos can be distracting and take attention away from the baby. Instead:

  • Stick to solids or subtle patterns like soft stripes or small florals.

  • Avoid anything with large text or graphics that might dominate the frame.

5. Think About Layers and Textures

Adding layers or textures to your outfit can elevate your photos. Consider:

  • Lightweight cardigans or shawls for moms.

  • Linen or knit tops for dads.

  • Soft, textured fabrics like lace, cotton, or cashmere.

These details add visual interest while keeping the overall look natural.

6. For Mums: Embrace Soft, Flowing Styles

  • Dresses and blouses with soft, flowy fabrics photograph beautifully and flatter post-partum bodies.

  • V-necks or off-the-shoulder tops can add a touch of elegance.

  • Keep accessories minimal—delicate jewellery can enhance your look without overpowering the photo.

7. For Dads: Stay Classic and Simple

  • Neutral button-down shirts, henleys, or fitted sweaters are great choices.

  • Avoid overly casual items like graphic tees or athletic wear.

  • Roll up sleeves for a relaxed yet polished vibe.

8. For Siblings: Keep It Cute and Comfortable

  • Choose outfits that reflect their personalities while staying cohesive with the family’s color palette.

  • For girls: Dresses or rompers in soft tones with simple accessories.

  • For boys: Neutral button-downs, polos, or simple tees with comfortable trousers

Make sure their outfits are comfortable to avoid fidgeting during the session.

9. Don’t Forget About Baby

Most newborn sessions focus on soft, natural looks for the baby. Photographers often provide wraps, blankets, and props, so you usually don’t need to bring much. However:

  • Bring a plain onesie (white is ideal) for any family shots.

  • Avoid clothes with bulky seams, zippers, or distracting patterns.

10. Hair and Makeup Tips

  • For Mums: Keep your makeup natural and soft. Enhance features with a little blush, mascara, and lip colour. Avoid overly shiny or matte products.

  • For Dads: Simple grooming like a fresh shave or trimmed beard will help you look polished.

  • For Kids: Keep hairstyles natural and simple to avoid distractions.

11. Plan Ahead

  • Lay out outfits a day or two before the session to ensure everything is clean, ironed, and ready.

  • Pack backups for the baby (and yourself) in case of accidents or spills during the session.
