How to prepare for babies first cake smash

Writer: Andrea LowryAndrea Lowry

Preparing for your baby's first cake smash can be a fun and memorable experience! Here are some steps to help plan and execute a great cake smash session:

1. Choose the Right Time

  • Timing: Schedule the cake smash after your baby's nap time when they are well-rested and in a good mood.

  • Age: Most parents choose to do this around their baby’s first birthday.

2. Select the Cake

  • Flavour: Vanilla or chocolate are popular flavours.

  • Size and Decoration: My baker creates little mini cakes which are the perfect size for babies. These cakes will match whatever theme you choose.

3. Setting the Scene

  • Backdrop: Choose a themed backdrop for the photos and one that complements your baby's personality.

4. Props and Accessories

  • Outfit: I provide lot's of different outfits and party hats etc....

  • Props: You can include your own sentimental toys to enhance the theme.

5. Plan for Mess

  • Expect Mess: A cake smash will be messy, so prepare with plenty of wipes and towels for cleanup afterward.

7. Watch and Enjoy

  • Capture the Moment: Allow your baby to explore the cake at their own pace. Avoid pressuring them to “smash” it—let them enjoy the experience.

  • Stay Close: Be there to support them, and feel free to join in the fun giving them a little assistance if they need it.

8. Post-Cake Smash

  • Capture Reactions: After the cake smash, capture the baby’s reaction—whether they loved it or were confused.

  • Clean-up: A warm bath will be ready for cleanup afterwards to wash off the icing and cake.

9. Share the Experience

  • Sharing Memories: Consider how you want to share the experience, whether that's on social media, with friends and family, or creating a scrapbook.

By planning ahead and keeping things relaxed, your baby's first cake smash can be a delightful celebration! Enjoy the mess and the memories!
